There are basically two types of universities in the UK
Universities of antiquity
Universities with red bricks
Universities of the modern age
Universities, colleges, and institutions of higher education offer higher education in the UK. All universities are autonomous institutions that determine their own admission policies.
There are two phases to university education in Britain
Undergraduate programs
The postgraduate program.
Programs for undergraduates:
There are very few exceptions to the rule that undergraduate programmes are honors programmes at the bachelor’s level.
2) Duration: usually 3 years, but there are 4-year undergraduate programmes, such as sandwich programs, with an extra year for work experience (through work placements).
3) Study load: 120 credits per year, for a total of 360 credits over three years.
4) Presentations and essays are used for assessment.
Programs for postgraduates:
1) Masters by Instruction: Based on a curriculum
A master’s degree by research based on research and a thesis
For ordinary Masters, the duration is usually 1 year, and for Masters of Philosophy, it is usually 2 years.
The study load for 12 months is 180 credits.
A student can graduate with a Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) after completing 120 credits
Grading of qualifications:
In British universities, a student’s actual performance is determined by a classification system based on average results:
First class: 70% or higher.
60–70% in upper second class.
The percentage of lower-second-class students is 50–60%.
The third class is 40–50%.
There are many similarities between the Scottish education system and the systems in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
An honours degree’s undergraduate program lasts one year longer than an ordinary degree’s (4 years versus 3 years, in most cases).
In addition to undergraduate programs, Scottish universities offer long (5-year) master’s programmes that combine a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree, although only a master’s degree is awarded.
